Abstract
Objective: To get average hearing levels and rate of high frequency hearing loss of general population according to sex and age.

Study Design: We checked pure tone audiometric examination on persons who visited Asan health promotion center from January 2002 to December 2003. Total 75,874 (male£»44,500, female£»31,374) took audiometric evaluation. Average hearing threshold was calculated from average of 1000 and 2000 Hz hearing levels and high frequency hearing loss was defined as normal average pure tone thre-shold with average of 4 and 8 kHz hearing level above 40 dBHL.

Results: The incidence of hearing loss and high frequency hearing loss were increased along with age in both male and female group. There were no significant difference between male and female in average hearing threshold and the prevalence of hearing loss. But there were significant differences between male and female in the prevalence of high frequency hearing loss for age group above 20 years old.

Conclusion: In consideration of genetic difference, social environment, and most of all, military service, the prevalence of high frequency hearing loss in male population was significantly higher than female even if there were no significant difference in average hearing.
